Chapter Six
âPapa,â Hannah said at dinner that night, âdo you think we could get the door fixed? Smoky got out today and climbed a tree. Ruby was here and saved her. Rubyâs really good at climbingâyou should have seen her!â
âSmoky got out? Yes, weâll get the door fixed, and good for Ruby.â He poked at the green pile on his plate. âWhatâs this?â
âThose are dandelion leaves,â Hannahâs mother told him. âRuby says you can eat them like beet greens.â
âHmm. I donât care for beet greens,â he said.
âWell, I thought we should at least try them.â Hannahâs mother picked up her fork. âLetâs all take a bite at the same time.â
Hannah didnât think she was going to like the dandelion leaves either, but she was willing to see. Her mother counted to three, and they all took a bite.
It tasted nasty.
âWell now,â Hannahâs mother said after she swallowed. âThat was interesting.â
Hannahâs father had a funny look on his face. âYes. Interesting,â he said.
âTheyâre . . . theyâre very green,â Hannah added.
âThatâs a good way to put it. They are very green.â Hannahâs mother stood up, took the plate of leaves off the table, and put it on the counter. Then she sat back down. âWell, we tried it, but we wonât be trying it again.â
âThank you, my dear,â Hannahâs father replied. âNow, please pass the breadâI need to get this horrible taste out of my mouth.â

It had been a little while since Hannah had worked on her story. After dinner, she changed into her nightgown, then sat down at her desk. She grinned as she began to write.
âWhereâs that rotten cook?â Captain Blacktooth growled. âThere ya are! What are ya thinking, serving dandelion leaves for dinner? Do it again and Iâll make you walk the plank!â
âIâm sorry, Captain!â The cook did look very sorry. âI promise, I wonât do it again!â
âSee that you donât! Now, pass the bread!â Captain Blacktooth said.
It wasnât until she was falling asleep that she remembered that Ruby was going to take her frog hunting. She was sorry Ruby had left so quickly, but she wasnât sorry about missing out on the frogs.
