Chapter Six

“Papa,” Hannah said at dinner that night, “do you think we could get the door fixed? Smoky got out today and climbed a tree. Ruby was here and saved her. Ruby’s really good at climbing—you should have seen her!”

“Smoky got out? Yes, we’ll get the door fixed, and good for Ruby.” He poked at the green pile on his plate. “What’s this?”

“Those are dandelion leaves,” Hannah’s mother told him. “Ruby says you can eat them like beet greens.”

“Hmm. I don’t care for beet greens,” he said.

“Well, I thought we should at least try them.” Hannah’s mother picked up her fork. “Let’s all take a bite at the same time.”

Hannah didn’t think she was going to like the dandelion leaves either, but she was willing to see. Her mother counted to three, and they all took a bite.

It tasted nasty.

“Well now,” Hannah’s mother said after she swallowed. “That was interesting.”

Hannah’s father had a funny look on his face. “Yes. Interesting,” he said.

“They’re . . . they’re very green,” Hannah added.

“That’s a good way to put it. They are very green.” Hannah’s mother stood up, took the plate of leaves off the table, and put it on the counter. Then she sat back down. “Well, we tried it, but we won’t be trying it again.”

“Thank you, my dear,” Hannah’s father replied. “Now, please pass the bread—I need to get this horrible taste out of my mouth.”

It had been a little while since Hannah had worked on her story. After dinner, she changed into her nightgown, then sat down at her desk. She grinned as she began to write.

“Where’s that rotten cook?” Captain Blacktooth growled. “There ya are! What are ya thinking, serving dandelion leaves for dinner? Do it again and I’ll make you walk the plank!”

“I’m sorry, Captain!” The cook did look very sorry. “I promise, I won’t do it again!”

“See that you don’t! Now, pass the bread!” Captain Blacktooth said.

It wasn’t until she was falling asleep that she remembered that Ruby was going to take her frog hunting. She was sorry Ruby had left so quickly, but she wasn’t sorry about missing out on the frogs.
